💣 💥 VUCA?! Life is VUCA?! 📣
Hey:
I’m switching up the format here. Let me know what you think about it.
The Big Idea: VUCA
What the hell is VUCA?
An acronym that comes out of the fall of the Soviet Union:
Volatile
Uncertain
Complex
Ambiguous
People use the term wrong all the time. The origins of the term come out of a 1987 Army War College Document. It was meant to describe the period as the Soviet Union broke apart because the period before the fall of the Soviet Union was considered stable, certain, simple, and straight forward.
As a business term, the term is nonsense.
Our business lives have always been filled with all of the components of a VUCA environment.
That hasn’t changed and the hypercapitalist policies that began to take hold in the United States in the 1980s have only increased these attributes.
You need to know: People will use VUCA as an excuse to not create a strategy.
“The world’s upside down, we can’t possibly create a strategy for this!”
WRONG!
VUCA means strategy is more important than ever.
How do you do that?
The same 5-step process that I teach in my workshops works in any environment:
Know Success
Know Your Market Focus
Know Your Value Proposition
Get the Right Resources
Take Action
Why does this work?
You can revisit these 5 ideas quickly.
You can adjust your thinking quickly.
You can get back to acting quickly.
Most strategies are planning documents.
Planning is often procrastination in an acceptable form.
Strategy is choice.
Strategy is focus.
Strategy is action.
Am I wrong?
Quote:
“It has always felt VUCA because it has always been VUCA.” —Professor Roger Martin.
Let me know what you think of the new format. Each week, I’m going to take a topic that I have been thinking about or hearing about. Then, I’ll address it as I do in my own special way.
If you have a topic you want to hear about, drop me a note.
Also, keep an eye out because I’m going to do some new meet-ups, courses, and webinars in the next few weeks.
If you dig this: share it!
