Contribution...a simple idea!
Hey!
In the States, I guess we call this the last week of summer since next weekend is Labor Day weekend.
Even though we’ve seemingly been fighting a forty-year war on labor in America.
Over the last week or so, I read a book called Fulfillment about the pandemic and Amazon and one of the themes was the overall decline of American cities and the winner-take-all state of cities and the economy in the United States.
As a cleanser, I also took out a copy of The Essential Drucker for my trip to Las Vegas because I had been reading a few things that talked about Drucker’s methods of planning, goal setting, and time management.
The key part of the middle section on personal management was a question that Drucker asked all of us to ask ourselves to continue to provide value to the world and to keep ourselves valuable:
What can I contribute?
As the pandemic continues to rage in many parts of the world, thinking about the way you want to contribute is a good place to begin. From my conversations with folks all over the place, I’ve heard the idea of contribution and making an impact take on renewed importance to folks.
During the pandemic, I’ve spent time studying marketing and strategy. I even took a certificate from Cambridge so that I could answer the question: “What do I have in common with Charles Darwin?” with the answer, “We both studied at Cambridge!”
But in looking at things and thinking through ways to contribute, it seems that a focus on strategy, power, and recovery…in other words, what comes next is likely the best place to put my focus.
As we head into the end of the summer here in North America, my question for you is what do you want to contribute now?
