7 Basics of Post-Pandemic Strategy
Hey-
For some reason, the boy is into Bar Rescue and I’ve gotten into it because Jon Taffer does a pretty great job hitting on the basics of strategy and marketing.
That got me thinking about the pandemic and the way that we are seeing things open up from the pandemic. So I wanted to spend a few moments sharing with you 7 basics of post-pandemic strategy.
They may not be things like “butt funnels” or “PODs” but they might help you:
1. Strategy now is about power:
In today’s world, your strategy needs to give you more power or it needs to take power away from your suppliers, your customers, or your competition.
In looking at any strategy, look at where the power is going.
2. A successful strategy is about consistently adding value:
You may be able to capture value without creating additional value for a short time, but at the first opportunity, they will jump from your business to another.
So always add value.
3. A post-pandemic strategy will require the ability to change quickly:
We have to be able to recognize signals. We must be able to regularly check in, understand the situation we exist in, and change our actions to reflect our reality.
4. An emergent strategy may mean that you end up in an entirely different place than you imagined:
An emergent strategy is the opposite of a classical strategy. An emergent strategy requires a plan but means you allow the world you exist in to shift you and change you so that you end up being successful.
Emergent strategies shift and shape back and forth, twisting and turning, and leading you to a pattern where your strategy achieves success.
5. Industry is a construct in your and your team’s mind, a good strategy now needs to be rooted in understanding what your customer’s need:
This is the old idea of folks don’t want a drill they want a hole.
Over time we’ve moved away from the idea of an industry being important because there are considerations that your customers make that don’t fall into the clear lines of industry.
They think in terms of solutions, not industry.
You need to do the same.
6. Your strategy’s success comes down to your people and your resources:
So use them both wisely.
7. VUCA:
Every situation we are dealing with over the next months to several years will contain one component of the VUCA model:
Volatile
Uncertain
Complex
Ambigious
So be prepared.
This isn’t everything you need to know about strategy now, but it is a start.
What are you focusing on now?
Let me know.
